He went into teaching and in 1887 became Professor of English Literature at the University of Strathclyde. Shortly thereafter he became Professor of English Literature at Glasgow University. He died in 1894.

His works include several well-known novels, including "The Iron Hand" (1874), "The Bailiff" (1875), "The Three Partners" (1876), "Castle Denton" (1878), The Laurels of Lasswade (1880) and "Mabel's Inheritance" (1885).
